I can still remember the first time I realized he loved her. Looking through the living room window of the home I grew up in, I watched silently as my “baby” brother made a space next to him on the couch with a blanket and a plate of food. It was football season, and like always, our family could be found at my mother’s home barbecuing, and catching up on what was new. Mel had been around for months now.. honestly I think it had already been a year since he first brought her “home,” and even though I knew they were crazy about each other (they seriously were attached at the hip) it wasn’t until that afternoon that I saw “it.”

My brother is the guy who when he loves you, he LOVES you. He can make you feel special by just the way he greets you and if you get him to laugh… forget about it! If I had to describe him in one word it would be protector. Which is funny to think about because he’s four years younger than I am, and I should be protecting him… and in all fairness, I think I did a pretty good job of that when it came to girls. (Anyone whose dated either one of my brothers can attest to this.) LOL Yet, some of my most vivid memories include him protecting me. For instance, I must have been about 9 or 10 years old when me and my older brother Ben, were fighting over whatever it is kids fight over at that age. And suddenly and out of nowhere, my little brother goes flying over my bed and attempts to put his much older, much taller brother in to some kind of wrestling move. Thinking about it now makes me laugh.

Of course as he got older the inevitable “too cool” stage came and as much as I didn’t want to admit it to him (he seriously was the biggest brat) I really missed him. I found comfort in knowing that one day that stage would pass and he would be back to “my protector” once again. As we entered adulthood (my 20’s and his late teens) we found our groove again.

This is when Mel entered into his life, and again, me being me, it took sometime to warm up to! But eventually, her warm voice and big smile became a constant at our home. That day on the couch, when he so selflessly prepared a place for her at his side, I knew that’s where she would stay.

Fast forward seven years, a gorgeous little boy, and the day I watched my “baby” brother standing tall at the end of an isle… you better believe it took EVERYTHING to keep it together behind that camera. lol

Melissa and Laurence, I wish you a lifetime of happiness, love, triumphant moments of accomplishment, and God at the center of your relationship. For through him all things are possible, and with him, you two will be a beautiful example of love and selflessness to that little boy looking up at you right now.

I love you…
